+234 // Still Water
It was just before 6 PM on November 15th, 2022 when 35-year-old Heidi Matheny entered the Preble County Sheriff's office in Eaton, Ohio. She looked distressed and sounded frantic, alleging that she wanted to turn herself in for murder. According to her, the victim was her 93-year-old grandmother, Alice Matheny, who Heidi had just drowned. Upon hearing this confession, staff contacted Eaton Police officers and, from there, Heidi was brought in for an interview. In her recount, she spun a tale of family drama, financial struggles and a 93-year-old woman who was at the end of her rope. But as investigators dug deeper, they learned things were not as they seemed, and below the shallow surface of Heidi’s story was something far more tragic.
